Keep Liberty Beautiful is interested in forming a recognition program for our local schools to honor the many ways that our schools engage their students in environmentally-positive programming and activities. We believe that all of our schools should receive recognition for their leadership in growing young environmentally aware citizens.
This is a simple recognition program because we know that your primary activity at your school is education. We do not want to get in the way of that; rather we would like to be a resource to enhance your efforts. Our hope is that your school will be interested in participating in activities in these Keep America Beautiful goals in appropriate education setting and/or school/club activities.
These Goals and examples of activities include:
· Litter Prevention
o Possible campus cleanups to discourage littering (we can loan supplies---safety vests, gloves, litter reachers--- and provide garbage bags and water for volunteers). We just need a sign in list of volunteers, number of bags collected, date of activity, and pictures after an event.
o In September/October and March/May campus cleanups, we can provide t-shirts for volunteers for all preregistered cleanups.
o Classroom programs on Litter Prevention. (We have donated lesson plans and idea posters as well as Keep America Beautiful Waste in Place Resource Books of Lesson Plans at each elementary school)
· Waste Reduction and Recycling
o School recycling efforts with student involvement (limited bins for public areas are available)
o Participation in national recycling competitions is encouraged and supported. We can at times provide incentives during the contests to encourage participation
o Classroom lessons on Waste Reduction/Recycling (note resources/ideas available from Resource Specialists)
o Special recruitment/awareness activities during November to encourage recycling in conjunction with America Recycles Day. KLB can provide pledge cards, banner, and some ARD giveaways to schools with activities registered by October 1st.
· Campus Improvement/Greenspaces/Gardening
o Garden/planting projects incorporated in classroom on club activities. KLB can provide some supplies/resources for proposed activities registered by October 1st, including some raised beds, pocket planters, seeds, and possibly limited plants (seasonal) & trees, while supplies last. We also have a variety of garden tools/gloves to loan out for activities.
o Arbor Day (February) tree planting. Up to five trees can be donated to each school that is preregistered with a specific plan for tree care.
o Stormwater Pollution/Water Conservation Activities
Registered school programs can receive storm drain markers and supplies for campus projects/ we also have two 3 dimensional enviroscapes for stormwater pollution education and wetlands education lessons. These are available on a check out basis.
o Any other ideas in these areas are encouraged. We also encourage any clubs/groups who want to participate in hosting a booth in their school’s name at the annual Earth Day Celebration on April 23rd after school. We can supply all supplies needed for booth activities for interested groups.
All participating schools will receive a ‘yard sign’ for display at your entrance as well as a 4 ft. banner to display in your lobby, school office, cafeteria, or area of your choice during the year.
In May, KLB will meet with selected community leaders to recognize all schools and their projects and to present cash awards and plaques to three particularly outstanding schools, based on participation and results.
Is your school interested?
All we ask is that each school designate a contact and register by October 1st.
*For each activity, upon completion, submit a sign in list of participants, and simple description of project, and pictures of activity within two weeks of completion. Different activities may be accomplished by different clubs or groups or classes.
To receive assistance, supplies, etc. for use in an activity, please register ahead so that we can assist you.
We believe we have the best students, teachers, and administrators in the world and we want them to be the greatest, too!
Thank you for your consideration!
We are looking forward to working with you And recognizing all that you do.
