adopt liberty

Adopt Liberty  is a new take on an old idea.  It is a community appearance program sponsored by Keep Liberty County Beautiful in conjunction with local municipal governments. The Adopt Liberty Program serves as an umbrella for several “adopting” possibilities in our county and cities. The idea is to create public interest and support for local roads and bodies of water as well as public spaces such as trails, green spaces, parks, neighborhood blocks, or county facilities. Existing national and state programs included in the Adopt Liberty County program are: Adopt-A-Highway (for areas on State and Federal roadways in coordination with the Georgia Department of Transportation), Adopt-A-Road, and Adopt-A-Stream (for local bodies of water in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources).

Purpose:
This program promotes public involvement in the maintenance and/or improvement of ‘adopted’ areas. The purpose is to care for and enhance these public areas by allowing the community to assume some personal interest and responsibility. All major litter research studies show that litter decreases in areas where the community has taken a personal responsibility in maintaining those areas.  Evidently, it is easier for some people to litter when they think that no one cares. The Adopt Liberty Program shows that someone cares.

Who can adopt?
Any one can adopt: individuals or families, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, youth groups, school groups, church groups, and businesses.

What are the responsibilities if I adopt?
We ask you:
  • to commit for a minimum of a year
  • to try to have a cleanup at minimum once a quarter
  • to submit basic information on each cleanup---date of cleanup, number of hours, how many volunteers, how many bags collected, and any other debris collected.  This information can simply be called in (880-4888), emailed (klcb@libertycountyga.com), or mailed (P O Box 829, Hinesville GA 31310). I have a form that I can provide if you wish to use it. We just want to make this as convenient as possible for you.
  • to let me know a few days ahead if you need any supplies.  I can provide safety vests, garbage bags, rubber gloves as well as litter pickup tools that I can loan out. I can also arrange for pickup of large debris and garbage collected, if needed, with adequate notice.

We will install signs with your approval, noting your adopted spot or road location.

We know your time is valuable and we appreciate your commitment.  Thank you for considering this effort to make Liberty County the clean and beautiful place that it should be.

For more information on adopting an area or your neighborhood block, contact Karen Bell with Keep Liberty County Beautiful at 912-880-4888 or klcb@libertycountyga.com
